Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index

Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index is a term in biology/ecology. It measures the rarity and commonness of species in a community. The calculator uses the following formula to calculate the Shannon-Wiener diversity index:

H = - S p_i ln ( p_i ) .

Here p_i is the proportion of total number of species made up of the ith species.

Richness (S): Total number of species in the community
Simpson Diversity Index (D): D = S p_i².
Evenness (E): E = H / ln( S ) .

Here p_i is the probability for the i-th event.
